V. Sue Cleveland High School
Rio Rancho Public Schools, New Mexico

V. Sue Cleveland High School is the initial building constructed in the City of Rio Rancho, New Mexico’s, “Paseo Gateway.” Rio Rancho describes itself as a ‘City of Vision’ and Sue Cleveland High School is the community-based embodiment of that Vision.
Faced with the challenge to develop small learning communities to support the District’s “Learning Academy” approach to instruction, the design stacks identical academic houses on three levels, allowing academies to expand horizontally or vertically as enrollment fluctuates. A secure outdoor plaza connects the campus and serves as the school commons. The school provides students with a model learning environment supported by the latest trends in technology, including a wireless network, interactive white boards, overhead projectors, and audio enhancement systems. The school uses on and off-site resources to explore a broad range of student interest areas. The college campus atmosphere and sustainable design promoting energy conservation are important to the District’s focus on providing a healthy school. Sustainable features include extensive natural lighting, ground-source heat pumps, and heat-reflecting roof materials.
